Profile

Wladimir Köppen is a Russian-German geographer born in St. Petersburg in 1846. He was the inventor of the Köppen climate classification, the most widely used system in climate science.

By some accounts, it was his frequent back-and-forth travels from the then-capital of Russia to his family's estate in Crimea, near Simferopol, that first awakened him to the drastic differences in climatic zones.
