Gogol moved into an apartment on the top floor of this building with a couple of friends in 1829 after a trip to Germany; he stayed until May, 1831. The building, at four stories, was the first one to rise so high after of the tallest in the city. The owner was a certain Zverkov, a rich banker. The building featured in Gogol's story "Diary of a Madman" (1835).
